Welcome! I’m Zuri.
I was born and raised in London, England to a family of creatives and grew up on a diet of Reader’s Digest Condensed books, En Vogue, Whitney, Cher, bike rides with my brothers, rice and peas and a series of pet hamsters with ridiculously cute names.
I love all things magic and fantastical in whatever form it can be experienced; fiction, film, art, daydream… and although I enjoy reading crime, YA and romance, it’s pretty hard to beat a good fantasy book.
The number one thing I love about a good story…
…is being absorbed in a new world where the most fantastic and terrifying things happen to different types of people, keeping me wondering and guessing what will happen next. My ultimate goal is to create that feeling in others with what I write and, if nothing else, entertain them. If you’ve read anything I’ve written feel free to tell me how I’m doing!
…is in Dance (Jazz, Street, Contemporary). Currently I work in education; choreographing, teaching and producing dance pieces for young people with a passion for performing arts.
Like most writers, I’ve written creatively since a young age but I never considered it a serious career option. Dance was always my first passion and I prioritised it; I was determined to get the dance teaching job I wanted and I focused on achieving that goal first. However, I became inspired to take writing more seriously after one summer discovering great fantasy books – I suddenly wanted to write the type of fantasy I loved reading, there never seemed to be enough of it! So I explored all I could about the craft of writing and started building ideas for a novel.
It took ages to write. Years, actually. Mainly because I didn’t have any worthy ideas and also because a typical week consisted of hours and hours of dance training, sometimes performing, event planning and teaching. Still, I couldn’t give up the book and found ways to increase my writing speed. With the rise and success of e-books and independent publishing, I became more motivated to finish the book and publish it myself.
So why do I write…?
Because I love to read and writing my own book is a great way to read all the time! Just kidding… kinda. I want to contribute to the genre that has provided my most profound reading experiences and some of the most enjoyable imaginative worlds. And I also want to contribute to it with racially diverse stories because growing up, it was rare to read about people that looked like me in my favourite genre.
My first epic fantasy book, Deviants of Giftborn (The Etherya Series Book 1), marks the start of my journey as an independent author. I’m working on finishing the Etherya series so please do connect with me on social media or join my Readers List, where you will get access to free books, bonuses, early promos, news and more. (I also have a blog you might want to check out).
